Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cube steaks (about 1 pound total)
- 1 cup of all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)
- Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- In a shallow dish, combine the all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix well to ensure the seasonings are evenly distributed throughout the flour.
- Take each cube steak and dredge it in the seasoned flour, making sure to coat both sides thoroughly. Shake off any excess flour and set the steaks aside on a plate.
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the cube steaks to the skillet. Sear them for about 3-4 minutes on each side until they are golden brown. Remove the steaks from the skillet and set them aside.
- In the bottom of your crock pot, layer the sliced onions evenly.
- Place the seared cube steaks on top of the onions in the crock pot, arranging them in a single layer.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the beef broth, cream of mushroom soup, Worcestershire sauce, and dried thyme. If using mushrooms, add them to this mixture as well.
- Carefully pour the sauce mixture over the cube steaks in the crock pot, ensuring they are well covered.
- Cover the crock pot with its lid and set it to cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours.
- About 30 minutes before the cooking time is up, check the steaks for tenderness. They should be fork-tender.
- Once done, carefully remove the cube steaks from the crock pot using a slotted spoon and place them on a serving platter. Spoon some of the onion and mushroom sauce over the top.
- Sprinkle fresh parsley over the top for added color and freshness.
- Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles to soak up the creamy sauce.
Notes
- Allow the cube steak to cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container. It can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Reheat in a saucepan over low heat or microwave in short intervals, stirring in between.
- Look for well-marbled cube steaks for the best flavor and moisture.
- Feel free to customize the sauce with your favorite herbs and spices.
