  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

Tender cube steaks are slow-cooked in a creamy mushroom sauce, layered with onions for a comforting and hearty family meal. Perfectly paired with mashed potatoes or rice to soak up the delicious sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cube steaks (about 1 pound total)
  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a shallow dish, combine the all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix well to ensure the seasonings are evenly distributed throughout the flour.
  2. Take each cube steak and dredge it in the seasoned flour, making sure to coat both sides thoroughly. Shake off any excess flour and set the steaks aside on a plate.
  3. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the cube steaks to the skillet. Sear them for about 3-4 minutes on each side until they are golden brown. Remove the steaks from the skillet and set them aside.
  4. In the bottom of your crock pot, layer the sliced onions evenly.
  5. Place the seared cube steaks on top of the onions in the crock pot, arranging them in a single layer.
  6. In a medium bowl, whisk together the beef broth, cream of mushroom soup, Worcestershire sauce, and dried thyme. If using mushrooms, add them to this mixture as well.
  7. Carefully pour the sauce mixture over the cube steaks in the crock pot, ensuring they are well covered.
  8. Cover the crock pot with its lid and set it to cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours.
  9. About 30 minutes before the cooking time is up, check the steaks for tenderness. They should be fork-tender.
  10. Once done, carefully remove the cube steaks from the crock pot using a slotted spoon and place them on a serving platter. Spoon some of the onion and mushroom sauce over the top.
  11. Sprinkle fresh parsley over the top for added color and freshness.
  12. Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles to soak up the creamy sauce.

Notes

  • Allow the cube steak to cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container. It can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat in a saucepan over low heat or microwave in short intervals, stirring in between.
  • Look for well-marbled cube steaks for the best flavor and moisture.
  • Feel free to customize the sauce with your favorite herbs and spices.
