Crispy Rice Snacks: The Ultimate Guide to Making Delicious and Healthy Treats

  • Author: Maria
  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 12-15 pieces 1x

Description

These crispy rice snacks are a delicious treat made from day-old rice, seasoned flour, and spices, fried to golden perfection. Ideal as an appetizer or snack, they can be customized with various toppings and served with your favorite dipping sauces for added flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups of cooked rice (preferably day-old rice for better texture)
  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup of cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon of paprika (optional for a smoky flavor)
  • 1/2 cup of water (adjust as needed)
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Optional toppings: sesame seeds, chopped green onions, or chili flakes

Instructions

  1. Start by gathering your ingredients. Make sure the rice is cooked and cooled. Day-old rice works best as it is drier and holds its shape better when fried.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked rice, all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and paprika. Mix well until the rice is evenly coated with the dry ingredients.
  3. Gradually add water to the mixture, stirring continuously. You want to achieve a thick, sticky consistency that holds together but is not too wet. Adjust the amount of water as necessary.
  4. Once the mixture is well combined, let it sit for about 10-15 minutes. This resting period allows the flavors to meld and the mixture to firm up slightly.
  5. After resting, prepare a clean surface or a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. This will be where you shape your rice snacks.
  6. Using your hands, take a small amount of the rice mixture (about 1-2 tablespoons) and shape it into a small patty or disc. Aim for a thickness of about 1/2 inch. Repeat this process until all the mixture is shaped into patties. You should have around 12-15 rice snacks, depending on the size.
  7. If desired, sprinkle sesame seeds or chopped green onions on top of each patty for added flavor and texture. Press them gently into the surface to ensure they stick.
  8. In a large, deep skillet or frying pan, pour enough vegetable oil to cover the bottom by about 1 inch. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small piece of the rice mixture into it; if it sizzles immediately, the oil is ready.
  9. Carefully place a few rice patties into the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry them in batches if necessary. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on one side until golden brown and crispy.
  10. Using a slotted spoon, flip the patties and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes on the other side. They should be evenly browned and crispy all around.
  11. Once cooked, remove the rice snacks from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil. Season with a little extra salt while they are still hot, if desired.
  12. Once all the rice snacks are cooked, arrange them on a serving platter. You can serve them warm or at room temperature.
  13. If you like, drizzle a little soy sauce or your favorite dipping sauce over the top for added flavor. Alternatively, serve the snacks with a side of dipping sauce for guests to enjoy.
  14. For an extra touch, garnish with additional chopped green onions, sesame seeds, or chili flakes to enhance the presentation and flavor.
  15. These crispy rice snacks can be enjoyed as a standalone appetizer, a party snack, or even as a side dish with your favorite Asian-inspired meal.

  • For best results, use day-old rice as it has a firmer texture that holds up better during frying.
