  • 4 large eggs, at room temperature

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt until well combined.
  3. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add the frothy yeast mixture and eggs. Mix until the dough starts to come together.
  4. Add the softened butter, a few pieces at a time, mixing until fully incorporated. The dough will be sticky and soft.
  5. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 10-15 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  6. Form the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly greased bowl. Cover and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  7. Once risen, punch down the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface.
  8. Roll the dough out to about 1/2 inch thick. Cut out the donuts using a donut cutter or two round cookie cutters.
  9. Place the cut donuts on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Gather scraps, knead gently, and roll out again to cut more donuts.
  10. Cover the shaped donuts and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  11. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot to 350°F (175°C).
  12. Carefully place a few donuts in the hot oil, frying for about 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  13. Remove donuts with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Repeat with remaining donuts.
  14. In a medium bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, whole milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Adjust consistency as desired.
  15. Dip the tops of the cooled donuts into the glaze, allowing excess to drip off.
  16. Sprinkle toppings over the glazed donuts while the glaze is still wet. Let sit for a few minutes to set before serving.
