Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt until well combined.
- Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add the frothy yeast mixture and eggs. Mix until the dough starts to come together.
- Add the softened butter, a few pieces at a time, mixing until fully incorporated. The dough will be sticky and soft.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 10-15 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Form the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly greased bowl. Cover and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Once risen, punch down the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface.
- Roll the dough out to about 1/2 inch thick. Cut out the donuts using a donut cutter or two round cookie cutters.
- Place the cut donuts on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Gather scraps, knead gently, and roll out again to cut more donuts.
- Cover the shaped donuts and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot to 350°F (175°C).
- Carefully place a few donuts in the hot oil, frying for about 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown.
- Remove donuts with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Repeat with remaining donuts.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, whole milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Adjust consistency as desired.
- Dip the tops of the cooled donuts into the glaze, allowing excess to drip off.
- Sprinkle toppings over the glazed donuts while the glaze is still wet. Let sit for a few minutes to set before serving.
Notes
- Make sure the milk is warmed to the right temperature to activate the yeast properly.
- Donuts can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
